Game Decision

This week our readings were about flow. The video I had watched talked about game flow and how it is a physiological theory that game developers use to keep their players engaged with their game.

Game flow basically means a game's ability to keep the player engaged to the point they are totally engrossed in the game and forget about their surrounding environment.

The flow of a game is very important and it is what keeps players coming back. To achieve this the game developer has to make their game challenging. They also need to have a balance because if something becomes too challenging many people give up or lose motivation to continue playing, so the game has to have a good balance of challenges that keep the player engaged and mentally stimulated. In saying that if the game becomes too easy the player will get easily bored and your game wont be as exciting as you had hoped.

The game developer has to keep this flow throughout their game to get the best outcome.

the progression of flow - Present Player With Challenge → Player Achieves A Flow State → Maintain Flow State.  Keeping the flow of their game also allows the player to gain new skills and master them along the way eg jumping. it is a simple skill in a game but with the flow of the game it can become difficult throughout and that's what keeps the player engaged.

Here is the video I think it is worthwhile watching and learning more about game flow. - Video

  1. I agree that the flow of the game is very important because it is what keeps the player motivated to play and have fun playing it. The game should be challenging to the player that he keeps thinking about what is gonna happen next because if the player knows what's happening in the game, it will be boring and not challenging.
