Games Design Document
GDD- Reading
This week we learned all about Games Design Documents and their purpose within designing games and why they're important. Initially, I found it very confusing to grasp but as I continued to read on I understood the importance of GDD.
It helps the designer keep track of their ideas and not to sway away from it.
This document is an essential part of designing a game as it is what the designer will look back at when creating their game and it keeps them on track without forgetting major or minor details that they want to implement in their game.
The article I read gave a good insight into what categories you should include in your games design document to get the most out of it. these are :
(Nacke, 2014)
- Know your target
- Keep it short
- Prioritise design
- Illustrate
- Don't tell others how to do their jobs
- Use user stories
- Separate code from content
- Invest in a good format
- Use clear terminology
- Kill redundancy
- Avoid weak language
- Capture your reasoning
Name
Premise
Overview
Back story
Enemies
Player defense and weapons
Goal & victory conditions
Art style
Audio
Map
Target platforms/distribution
Unique aspects
Further considerations
- Similar existing ideas.
I agree that the Game Design Document is an essential step when designing a game and thinking about its design because it is hard to remember everything without recording it and writing everything in a document. I think that every step we take should be written on a document so as to help us and also keep track of everything we want to include in the game design especially with the game designer so as to know what the game is about.
